Hello! Remember me? I’ve emerged from the wilderness where I was writing a 10,000 word Masters paper (if anyone wants to know about the intersections between international investment law and human rights… hit me up). I HAVE FREE TIME AGAIN YAAAY. But more importantly, I’m here to share my secrets on how to look and feel put together when you have no time.
Occasionally, people ask how I balance full time lawyering, writing a blog and still fitting in the nice things life has to offer, like sport and travel and socialising. Well, if you throw a Masters into the mix, my advice to fit all this in is 1) Stop socialising. 2) Stop exercising, and 3) Stop writing on your blog (sorry about that, guys).
But in all seriousness, through the last couple of months while I’ve been in writing mode, I’ve relied on a couple of tricks to help me save time but feel in control of it all, with a little help from my ethical, earth-friendly friends Leotie Lovely, Lipcote and Ilia Beauty.
1. Apply red lipstick.
Truly, this powerful trick can make a world of difference when you have no time to put any other makeup on. And not only does it make you look like you’ve put effort into your appearance, it also makes you feel like you can take on anything.
This colour is “Strike It Up” by Ilia Beauty. Ilia uses the most natural products possible. Here’s from their website: “the ethical-sustainable approach embodied in each piece is filled with certified organic bio-active botanicals that nourish and rejuvenate the skin. All cream lip products are housed in a sleek recycled aluminum case. Each product is filled with up to 85% bioactive organic ingredients.”
Unlike other ethical lipsticks that I’ve tried, Ilia has excellent coverage and isn’t drying for my lips.
Brushing hair optional.
2. Apply a lipstick sealer.
Did you guys know about this trick? I found out about lip sealer for the first time through Lipcote lipstick sealer and, really, it’s changed my life.
Lipcote goes over the lipstick to keep it on your lips. Made with all natural ingredients, it is vegetarian and is not tested on animals.
I was sceptical until I tried it. For me, the real test was whether my lipstick was still on after my morning coffee. I always have to reapply lipstick after my coffee, because half of it ends up on my cup. I was pleasantly surprised.
It doesn’t last all day, but you definitely have to reapply a whole lot less.
Pre-coffee. Please don’t judge my sleepy, pre-caffeinated eyes.
Post coffee! My lipstick is still there!
The best part is you don’t have to worry that your lipstick has all rubbed off and everyone can now tell that you have only had five hours sleep every night for the past week.
3. Put both in a makeup bag and toss it into your tote.
Lastly, put your lipstick and lip sealer in a small bag, like this stunning clutch from Leotie Lovely. I love its bright colours and the fact it’s lovingly, ethically handmade – completely from recycled materials! All items sold on leotielovely.com are vintage, re-purposed, upcycled, or recycled. It’s also vegan.
On the chance you do need to reapply your lipstick, you won’t have to spend 10 minutes searching for it at the bottom of your bag again! If you change handbags, you can quickly transfer your makeup over. Staying at someone’s house? No problem. It’s also pretty enough to even use a clutch for an evening out! Plus, you will feel like a next-level organised queen.
