I’m very proud and excited to share with you some news: I’m partnering with my dear friend Hannah of Life + Style + Justice and five other bloggers from the Ethical Blogger’s NetworkDanielle,¬†Jacqui, Holly, Cassandra, and Christy – to help launch a social enterprise in the Philippines, A Beautiful Refuge.

A Beautiful Refuge will provide vulnerable women with meaningful, dignified employment in creating beautiful, ethically-made homewares, such as cushions and wall hangs (including two items for the first collection of t-shirts, designed by yours truly).

We’re founding A Beautiful Refuge as an extension of A Safe Refuge, a resource centre for women and children in crisis. A Safe Refuge currently cares for about 50 women and children, 13 of which are full time students,¬†their tuition paid in full by Safe Refuge. While the majority of women associated with A Safe Refuge go back to school, enroll in further studies or find employment, a handful of individuals experience greater difficulty finding good work due to their unique physical and mental needs. These are the women that A Beautiful Refuge exists to support.

Hannah has done an incredible job over the past few months researching and securing ethical and transparent supply chains for the products that will be used in creating A Beautiful Refuge products. The end result? A Beautiful Refuge will produce lovingly handcrafted screen printed items with a mission to embody fair trade and environmentally responsible principles throughout the production process.

We’ll be printing on ethically made and environmentally friendly textiles from Freeset in India and custom-sewn pieces by Fairsew in Cambodia. Using these wonderful companies ensures that our entire supply chain will be transparent and that each worker whose hands touch our products will be paid fairly, not just the women at Safe Refuge.

You can read more about the project, view our financials and business plan and donate through the A Beautiful Refuge website.

Thank you so much for your support.

Yours Fairly,
