BRAND FEATURE: MATTER PRINTS

Do you know that rare and special feeling when something or someone aligns so perfectly with your values and/or aesthetics that it’s as if you dreamed them up yourself?

That’s how I felt when I received an introductory email from MATTER a couple of weeks ago.

Their introduction is so darling that I have to share it with you:

We’re a Singapore-based, socially motivated label focused on travel wear for the modern, globetrotting woman. Centered on affordable luxury, thoughtful design, and provenance, MATTER is about connecting artisans with designers and heritage with modern design to create travel wear with rich, cultural stories to tell.

A socially-motivated label? Yes, please! Clothes with stories to tell? Gimme.

Stylish, ethical fashion + Travel. MATTER combines everything that One Fair Day is about. MATTER basically sums me up. I’ve always thought of fashion and travel as two distinct themes. Combining them is genius.

I look back on photos of some of my earlier extended travels (nine months in Europe starting when I was 17, a 5-week-long jaunt through South East Asia at age 19, and 3 months in South America when I was 20) and cringe at what I wore. Let’s just say that, I took the image of “free spirited” a little too far. The idea that you can look stylish while travelling is wonderful for more than just the photos you will take and later share. Think of all the extra exploring time you will gain simply by having a stylish and comfortable go-to option to throw on in the morning. Add a plain, Fairtrade cotton tee-shirt,  a pair of sandals, a bag and you’re ready to get out of the door and into whichever city or countryside that you’ve travelled to see. And you can know that these pants will withstand the trials of travel, as MATTER have field-tested them on a cross-country road trip across India!

The team at MATTER don’t just travel for pleasure. The team personally visits each production partner to develop a long-term relationship. Then – and how sweet is this – each pant is shipped with GPS coordinates of where it was woven, stitched and printed, along with the story of its weave or print. Even the design of the pants has a story (beyond comfort and style): each pant is based on heritage silhouettes and made using time-honored techniques of the loom and blockprint: Mobi, Bhalka and Chakri are just some of the print stories (and Ikat is coming soon). Check our MATTER on Instagram and Facebook for some behind-the-scenes photos on how the pants are made.

Behind-the-loom

I’ve mentioned a few times that I keep a running list of things I want to purchase, and I can’t tell you how long I have had “patterned, silk, peg leg trousers” on that list… I’ve finally found what I’ve been looking for! the Reworked Harem Pant completely fits the bill. Not just for travel – I would wear these pants to work with black court shoes and a plum-coloured blouse and lipstick and then throw them in the wash at the end of the day (yep, these are machine-washable). Oh, and did I mention that MATTER ships internationally for free?!

Matter

1. Reworked Harem Pant + Leharia Charcoal for $119.00USD / 2. The Sunday Overalls + Mobil Indigo for $119.00USD / 3.  The Hitched Hikers + Kamal Lagoon for $69.00USD

Let me summarise all the things I love about MATTER with the help of some dot points:

  • Socially-motivated
  • Stylish clothes with stories to tell
  • Machine-washable silk and cotton
  • Honour traditional techniques
  • Free international shipping
  • How cute is the name? Don’t you want your clothes to MATTER?
  • Great behind-the-scenes images
  • A really great blog

You can’t half tell that I’m excited about this label, right?

Do you have a trip planned? Please, do yourself a favour and invest in a pair of pants that MATTER.

Yours Fairly,

Ashlee

I always have these grand plans of dressing well while I am travelling and always end up looking like a hot mess haha. I love these designs – I think the shorts would be perfect regardless of travelling or not.

Me too! I’m determined – I’m going to invest in a couple of pairs and take my next trip stylishly. And I agree that these pieces are great whether you’re travelling or not :-)
